Passion is expensive. Being involved in an “extreme sport” like motorcycle racing is a taxing and time-consuming endeavor. But, more important than the investment of time is the investment of love. Pouring your heart and soul into something that can ultimately kill you, and the ones you love takes fortitude that most people do not possess.
My regular readers are convinced at this point that I’m blogging about a fellow rider lost to a tragic accident, but they are wrong. I apologize for the misleading sub-text. After a 9 year battle, Dave’s body finally gave in to cancer last week.
Dave Brichler was a great guy, a good father, and a friend to many. Just how many might surprise you, it certainly surprised me. If the measure of a man can be determined by the number of people who grieve for him when he dies, then Dave was one of the greatest.
Goodbye my friend.

An interesting (albeit standard American response) phenomenon has begun to occur. Not interesting because of what is happening, rather why it is happening.
In spite of sharply increasing anti Muslim sentiment, protests and even violence, America is still reacting to a perceived threat like a kid to a bully.
Here’s how it works: On the first day, the bully beats you up. You spend the next week or so hiding out and avoiding him. Then inevitably, you end up seeing him again. Here’s the interesting part: The target of the bully will go out of his/her way to not anger or upset the bully on the chance that a second beating might not occur. In fact more often than not, the target will respond with a “kill him with kindness” approach.
Psychologically, this is a standard response to perceived fear by bullied school children. Interestingly enough, the population of America (even the President) is reacting the exact same way to Islam.
Let me put it this way: If an American Muslim church had plans to burn the Bible, do you think it would be on the front page of the news? Would the President of the United States talk about it? Would I even be posting this blog? It seems likely that if the tables were turned, people would be shouting about equal rights and the church’s constitutional right to burn the books. Now ask yourself why we’d be saying that.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not criticizing the way the issues are being handled, just commenting on behavior that I’m seeing. Food for thought, no?
