Oil’s NOT well
At work today, I’ve been listening to the BP hearings (you can see the whole thing live on ABC’s feed). Based on the evidence, there is absolutely no question that BP, and it’s management structure are 100% responsible for the spill, the failures in stopping the leak, and the poor clean up efforts. This is fact. BP’s safety history is the WORST in the industry by leaps and bounds. Their application of safety measures are a far second to their profit margin. Almost EVERYTHING done, pertaining to this particular drilling, was done incorrectly, and half-assed.
$733 million in fines were paid, quietly, last year by BP for safety violations ALONE.
BP had 760 safety violations last year (Exxon had 1, Mobile had 8).
The hearings are really just a public bashing of the BP CEO for the general public’s enjoyment.
OK, we’re past that. Now let’s move forward.
Will BP be banned from drilling in US waters?
Will BP be forced to change ANYTHING about how they do business AFTER they get slapped with the “eleventy zillion” dollar fine which they may or may not pay?
Will we get ANYTHING out of this except some exciting news to watch?
Spoiler alert… No.
