High Def Woes
A few short weeks ago, I finally entered the wonderful world of HD. The purchase of a
Samsung LCD and the HD/DVR combo from my cable company and I’m watching TV in a whole new way. The resolution and clarity on the HD channels is absolutely breathtaking, and even more so when it’s in your own living room.
Now, to the complaints. There are not nearly enough HD channels. Not that I don’t appreciate high-def Discovery, Animal Planet, Speed TV and the local Fox channel, but I really want to see The Daily Show in HD. And what’s with all the friggen’ baseball? Does anyone even watch this shit (not counting you, Chris)?
Secondly, the stuff I REALLY want to watch, like say… The last 3 FIM races… Were broadcast in uber-crunchy-low-def, stretched out to 1080 px. That sucks almost as much as realizing that my massive DVD collection on an HD screen looks like it was shot in VCR quality…
Then we come to the “almost HD” channels, which broadcast in what I can only guess is 720 x 480 or some such thing, so only 1/2 of my screen is in use. Why do all the shows I want to watch only appear on these channels?
Complaining aside, HD service is pretty awesome. I can honestly say I’ve spent more time looking at tree frogs and waterfalls on my TV in the last week than in the entire combined history of my life.
