Chatty Insipiration?
For the past two days I’ve had to listen to co-workers, friends, even strangers ramble on about how inspired they were by our new president’s speech yesterday.
My side of the conversation usually goes:
“You’re inspired by what he said? Did he use new words that you can’t find on Dictionary.com? Maybe he crafted them in such a beautiful way that he instilled confidence in you…” “Oh, what do you mean ‘speech writer’? So he was reading off someone else’s promises? Yeah, that sounds inspiring to me.”
I don’t know, call me crazy… But I’m not inspired by promises of grandeur dipped in wordy gold. Any educated asshat can read poetry to a crowd. Want to impress me? Let’s try something different: Say something, and then actually do it.
Yesterday’s speech reminded me of the scene in the movie Independence Day where Jeff Goldblum’s character is explaining his plan to infect the “mother ship” with a computer virus and Will Smith says:
“You really think you can do all that bullshit you just said?”

Don’t get me wrong, I have a great deal of hope for this president. But, our financial futures and general well-being are precariously balanced on the faith of a purportedly one-man champion-of-change. Time to put your actions where your words are, Mr. President. We’re tired of being lied to and manipulated. Don’t let us down.
I totally agree with you, the whole time I was listening to his speech, I couldn’t really let it sink in bc I know a team of writers have been perfecting it for months, enough words, lets see some action
